Ontario's police watchdog is investigating after a man allegedly stole a taxi before barricading himself in a stranger's home in East York on Tuesday night.

Toronto police were initially called to the area of Roblin Avenue and Plains road shortly before 10:00 p.m. for a report of a stolen vehicle.

The driver of the stolen taxi then smashed into another vehicle in the Pape Avenue and O'Connor Drive area before continuing on.

Shortly after, the man then got out of the taxi and "entered a home" on Torrens Avenue, where he allegedly threatened a person inside before barricading himself in a bedroom, according to Toronto police.

Emergency Task Force (ETF) officers were called in and attempted to negotiate with the man, the Special Investigations Unit said in a news released issued Wednesday morning.

"A short time later, Emergency Task Force officers forced their way into the bedroom and located the man with injuries," the SIU said.

The man was taken to hospital, where he remains in intensive care.

The SIU has invoked its mandate and assigned a total of four investigators to the case. They are still trying to confirm the man's identity.
