Edmonton runners say they are relieved that organizers have decided to cancel this Sunday's New York City Marathon because of Superstorm Sandy.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg made the announcement on Friday.

Bloomberg and race organizers initially said the race would go on, but then changed their minds after facing an angry backlash from New York City residents who are still grappling with damage and power outages from the storm.

John Stanton, founder of the Running Room, was relieved to hear the race was cancelled.

"There's been so much anxiety all week," Stanton said in an interview at one of his stores in Edmonton.

"There's been people who cancelled because they didn't want to go to New York because they felt that the recovery efforts were still underway and they might get in the way."

Stephen Price, owner of Dream Travel, led a group of about 150 Edmonton runners to New York. He says everyone understands the reasons for the cancellation.

"There's a much bigger picture," he said. "We need to remember that New York had a tragedy and that obviously is more important than the marathon."

More than 40,000 people were set to run this year's race, which is one of the biggest marathons in the world.
