Occupy Edmonton protesters who marched to the University of Alberta campus on Wednesday left the property peacefully after they were asked to do so by university officials.

About 50 protesters were told they would not be allowed to set up tents and camp on the university grounds. U of A Provost Carl Amrhein called it a question of public safety.

"We see this as an operational issue, we do not see this as a philosophical issue," he said. "We will not allow people to set up illegal encampments on university properties."

The protest began at noon in Ezio Faraone Park. Protesters proceeded across the High Level Bridge to the university campus where they were were met by a heavy presence of police and campus security.

The march was part of a national day of action opposing tuition increases.

People with the Occupy Edmonton movement camped in a downtown park owned by Melcor Developments for 43 days until they were evicted on Nov. 25.
