Canadian Blood Services is continuing its call for donors as 2012 comes to a close.

Judy Jones, donor services manager for southern Alberta South, says demand for blood can be higher over the holidays.

"Well, everybody has so much going on in their social lives, and family and getting together with everybody, so it's not top of mind and we want people to be aware there are people in the hospital and blood is always needed," Jones said.

Because clinics in both Calgary and Edmonton are closed on Jan. 1, Jones says they must collect double the supply on Dec. 31.

"So it's a bit of an extended clinic to try to get all the units to make sure we have enough for the patients in the hospital," Jones said. "So yes, it's a little more than we’re used to and it's something we don't usually do, extended clinics, but we want to make sure there's enough blood."

Many still are rolling up their sleeves during the holidays, like Frank Galloway who has been donating for more than two decades.

He attends a banquet hosted by Canadian Blood Services every year where he learns where his blood goes.

"A 100 people or so in that auditorium stood up and that's how many pints that she needed to save her life — that was one person … over 100 pints of blood," Galloway explained.

Art Ancelet, who also donates blood on a regular basis, says if you can get into the habit of donating your kids will too.

"My daughter is actually going to be turning 17 — she's expressed a desire to start donating," Ancelet said.

There are still 100 appointment slots open in both Calgary and Edmonton for Dec. 31.
