A 57-year-old man is dead after a construction accident involving a skid steer loader.

It happened in an alley in the northwest neighbourhood of Parkdale around supper time on Friday.

Emergency crews found the victim on the ground in critical condition when they arrived on scene. He later died in hospital.

The man was a dump truck operator for Astro Minimix and was experienced, according to Occupational Health and Safety spokesperson Jennifer Dagsvick.

She said the construction crew was working on an ATCO project and digging in an alley behind 2516 Second Avenue N.W.

One crew member was operating a skid steer, a small front-end loader, and was having problems with the door of the machine as it was apparently getting in the way of the controls and buttons, according to Dagsvick.

The bucket of the skid steer was up in the air when the dump truck operator walked over to help, but the bucket suddenly came down and hit him. He suffered crushing injuries to his chest.

Police and Occupational Health and Safety are now investigating and will try to figure out why the bucket came down when it shouldn't have. A stop work order has been issued for the site.

Dagsvick said the skid steer operator worked for Link-Line, and was also experienced.

She said the victim was waiting for his truck to be filled with dirt and was going out of his way to try to help the skid steer operator.
