Calgary's mayor says he won't be attending a conference featuring a speaker who has made highly divisive remarks about homosexuality.

Controversial Canadian Muslim preacher Bilal Philips is one of the headliners for the Unity Conference in Calgary starting Friday.

Phillips has been previously quoted saying homosexuals should be executed, if caught in the act.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi said while he doesn't advocate intolerance, he does support free speech.

"I’m interested to know what he's going to say when he gets here," Nenshi said. "I'm certainly not interested closing the gates of the city and saying, ‘Don't come.'"

The Unity Conference is a three-day event sponsored by the Muslim Council of Calgary.
