One of the people charged with attempted murder in the beating of a Calgary man in the Beltline area has been granted bail.

Garrett Smith will be under 24-hour house arrest when not at work.

John Herrera was attacked on May 23 while he was walking home. A Calgary courtroom heard Thursday he now has no brain function.

Crown prosecutor Ken McCaffrey said the victim's family has some tough decisions ahead of them.

"The prognosis is very poor. He hasn't improved at all since the incident happened," he said. "The family will be making decisions as to how much more medical intervention there will be in order to artificially keep Mr. Herrera alive."

He said if Herrera succumbs to his injuries, the charges will be upgraded.

Police say the attack on him was unprovoked.

Another man and woman are also charged with attempted murder, but did not apply for bail.

Chantelle Campbell and Jarod Henry were in court Thursday, but the case against them has been put over until July 18.
