A man is in custody following what police are calling an attempted assault Monday just before 10 p.m. MT.

Calgary police Duty Insp. Paul Malchow says it was a random attack.

"A 25-year-old female was walking ... just behind or west of Glenmore Landing on the south pathway. At that time she was attacked by a male from behind but she fought off her offender," he said.

The suspect fled on foot and the woman called 911 immediately.

Several police units were already in the area, including a HAWC police helicopter, and a suspect was arrested.

Police say the woman wasn't hurt during the attempted assault, but the 44-year-old man has been charged with sexual assault.

Officials believe there is no connection to a sexual assault that took place on Sunday.

Around 2 a.m. Sunday, police say a 26-year-old woman was sexually assaulted along a pathway near Deerfoot Trail and Blackfoot Trail S.E.
