A man was rescued from the Bow River on Monday afternoon by a woman who jumped in the water and swam out to save him.

Both people are being treated for hypothermia.

Calgary Emergency Medical Services got the call just before 2 p.m. MT about a man in the river near Shouldice Park in northwest Calgary.

Laura McClement was taking her dog for a walk when she saw the incident.

"Down the stream a little bit was a woman who identified herself as a strong swimmer and she went right in the water and she rescued him."

McClement said at first the woman was just trying to catch up to the man.

Once she reached him, McClement said, at times it looked as if both swimmers were going under, but the woman was able to get them to a small island.

"They were trying to get to the island from the far shore onto a beach of the island, and she was looking like she was doing it, but I think last minute had to stop and then somehow she fought the current again and she got to the other side of the island and that's where she was able to drag him."

EMS spokesman Stuart Brideaux said the man, believed to be in his 30s, and woman, believed to be in her 50s, were both picked up from the island by a Calgary fire and rescue boat.
