YMCA centres across Canada let families in for free on Sunday to promote Healthy Kids Day, an event aimed at getting children more active.

One activity that kept Calgary kids busy was helping to keep a parachute afloat by rapidly waving their hands up and down while holding the parachute and standing in a circle.

10-year-old Keza Filalia know about the benefits of these types of activities.

"It makes you move a lot and I can be healthy and at the same time I like sports," she said.

But many kids like her aren't as motivated.

A report from Active Healthy Kids Canada says nearly half of kids aren't physically active enough —  this amid escalating child obesity rates.

Statistics show only seven per cent of kids in Canada are getting the recommended one hour of physical activity a day.

Hayley Saunders with the Crowfoot YMCA says that's why Healthy Kids Day is important.

"When they make that decision as a child or a young person to be active it easily becomes a life-long decision when it's done when they're very, very young," she said.

Filalia says she chooses to be active and is trying to motivate her friends who struggle with watching too much TV and playing too many video games.

"Well, I say OK that's enough TV and then I turn off the TV and they're like, ‘Oh my goodness, come on that's my favourite show,’ and they get mad and stuff but I just want to improve my sport," she said.
