Thousands of workers needed to fuel oilsands boom

A growing oil and gas sector will mean at least 9,500 additional jobs will need to be filled in the next three years, a report released this week states.

A growing oil and gas sector will mean at least 9,500 additional jobs will need to be filled in the next three years, according to a new study.

The Petroleum Human Resources Council of Canada released the study Tuesday showing a growing need for skilled oil and gas workers.

Gary Leach, executive director of the Small Explorers and Producers Association of Canada, said a booming sector and aging workforce will mean a variety of specialized jobs will need to be filled – and soon.

"It's not working on a drilling rig," Leach said.

"Engineering talent, environmental specialists, equipment operators, equipment mechanics, almost any job you can think of, there's an opportunity in the oil and gas sector in the next few years."

Leach says companies must make the most of their older workers before they retire.

"There's going to be some companies that are impacted more than others," he said. "It only takes the loss of one of two specialists and an entire team of people really can't get their job done."

Leach says companies who implement flexible work hours might be able to keep some on the job a while longer.

The Council’s projections do not take in account future plants and pipelines.
