Conservative politician says he wants to spend more time with family

Former cabinet minister and Calgary MLA Lindsay Blackett announced Thursday he will pull the plug on his political career.

Blackett said he won’t run as the Progressive Conservative candidate for Calgary Northwest in the next election.

He said the decision wasn't taken lightly but he decided his family needs to be a priority.

"I've had a very exciting four years, but I have young children, who are 13 and 11, and the next four years," said Blackett. "I think it’s important I be around to help my wife with them. So I’m going to do something that will allow me to be closer to my family.

Blackett said he hasn't entirely ruled out a return to politics later in life.
