Shayna Conway, the only survivor of a murder-suicide in Alberta last month that claimed four young people, is determined to attend a memorial service for two of the victims on Jan. 14.

Rob Dale, a pastor and spokesman for the Conway family, told CBC News Thursday the young woman is planning to leave her Calgary hospital bed to attend a memorial service for Mitch MacLean and Tanner Craswell in Lethbridge.

"It is something that she is going to be doing unless doctors forbid it at the end," said Dale.

"That will be her first real trip out of the hospital. They know it's going to be a bit of a long drive — it's a two or three hour drive — but yes, she is going to go to Lethbridge. I think that will be a pretty emotional evening for her."

Conway was shot three times by the gunman, who went on to kill MacLean, Craswell and Tabitha Stepple before killing himself. Conway and Stepple were driving MacLean and Craswell to the airport so they could fly home to P.E.I. for the holidays.

Recovery going well

Conway was moved out of intensive care over the holidays and into the trauma unit, and now has her own room. She is going through intense physiotherapy and has been able to take her first steps, impressing staff with her progress.

Conway, who also has roots in P.E.I., had visitors from the Island over the holidays: two aunts and some close friends, as well as friends from Lethbridge. She has wireless internet in her room and is sometimes on her laptop checking Facebook, even posting a couple of status updates.

Dale said she is amazed by the support and encouragement she's received.

The Lethbridge Bulls, MacLean and Craswell's baseball team, will retire their uniform numbers (6 and 13) at the memorial. Stepple will also be remembered at the service.
