Alberta girl found safe just after Amber Alert issued

Police say an eight-year-old girl who was believed to have been abducted in southern Alberta was located safely shortly after an Amber Alert was issued.

Police say an eight-year-old girl who was believed to have been abducted in southern Alberta was located safely shortly after an Amber Alert was issued.

The alert, issued Saturday evening, said the girl was taken by a woman from a home in Fort Macleod, south of Calgary.

The alert said the pair had been last seen hitchhiking on a highway north of the community and were believed to be heading to Calgary.

Calgary police Duty Insp. Patty McCallum said the alert went out over their police radios, and that workers with the force's addictions outreach program heard the call.

McCallum said the workers spotted a woman and child matching the description outside a downtown Calgary shelter less than 15 minutes after the Amber Alert call went out.

RCMP say the woman is in custody but that no charges have been laid.
