Cyclists fined on Calgary pathways

Bylaw officers were cracking down on cyclists Friday morning who ride through a construction zone along the Memorial Drive pathway rather than dismounting.

Bylaw officers were cracking down on cyclists Friday morning who ride through a construction zone along the Memorial Drive pathway rather than dismounting.

Several cyclists riding in the 10th Street northwest area were issued fines of $100.

According to city officials, many pedestrians who use the pathway have complained about cyclists speeding through the area.

"We have been giving warnings, and it's quite clear that those warnings are not being heeded," said Kevin Leitch, who speaks for the city's animal and bylaw services department.

But some of the bike commuters who were slapped with the fines said the enforcement is unreasonable, since the pathway is wide enough to accommodate riders and pedestrians.
