The funding will be used to buy four double-decker buses, four shuttle buses, a bus depot and a building for bus storage and maintenance.

One of the new buses will take riders to the Crowfoot LRT station in Calgary, where tickets will be transferable to Calgary Transit, officials said.

Two thirds of the money is coming from Alberta's Green Transit Incentives Program (GreenTRIP) and the remainder from the Municipal Sustainability Initiative, officials said.

Cochrane town council will set a timeline for starting the new transit service in December.
