Tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings in effect earlier Thursday for the city of Red Deer and some parts of central Alberta have ended.

The warnings, issued earlier in the evening, followed three reported tornado touchdowns in the province.

The first occurred near Bergen, about 84 kilometres northwest of Calgary, around 4:40 p.m. MT. The second touchdown was sighted 12 kilometres west of the town of Olds around 5:55 p.m., Environment Canada said.

Both sightings were reported to Environment Canada by weather watchers.

A tornado was then observed by RCMP at 8:30 p.m., five kilometres west of Innisfail.

Tornado warnings were issued for the city of Red Deer and Red Deer County near Spruce View, Red Lodge Provincial Park, Penhold, Innisfail, Bowden, Sylvan Lake, Stephansson House and Pine Lake.

But they were downgraded to severe thunderstorm warnings around 9:40 p.m., which subsequently ended 15 minutes later.

However, severe thunderstorm warnings were still in effect at 10 p.m. for Lacombe County near Lacombe, Blackfalds, Gull Lake and Eckville.

Many other areas in central and northern Alberta were under severe thunderstorm warnings and watches Thursday.

Earlier in the evening, Environment Canada had tornado warnings in effect for Mountain View County near Olds, Didsbury and Sundre but the area was later put under a severe thunderstorm watch.

Earlier tornado warnings for areas around Carstairs, Stirlingville, Water Valley and Cremona were also downgraded.

The latest weather warnings can be found on the Environment Canada website.
