Nearly 40% of trucks fail police safety blitz

An inspection blitz on commercial trucks by police in Calgary has turned up more than 100 vehicles that need major repairs before they will be allowed back on the road.

An inspection blitz on commercial trucks by police in Calgary has turned up more than 100 vehicles that need major repairs before they will be allowed back on the road.

Police in Calgary have been inspecting commercial trucks for safety violations in a three-day blitz this week. CBC The three-day operation led by the CPS truck unit checked more than 300 vehicles, focusing on brake and suspension problems, properly secured loads and driver qualifications.

More than one third of the inspected vehicles required major repair before they could continue while over 70 needed minor repairs, police said.

Officials said the check stops usually result in roughly 30 per cent of the inspected trucks being taken off the road until the problems were resolved.

Similar inspections occur throughout the province each year.
